BEING IN THE MOMENT SOMETIMES IS JUST A MATTER OF SLOWING DOWN!

posted Saturday, 17 October 2009

You've often read me saying, LIFE IS IN THE MOMENTS.  Happiness is there also, it's not an end result.  We're so focused on things outside of us that we let the details of our lives get lost in the speed of events in our current world.  Folks email me items from all over the world.  I don't know the author of these words of wisdom, but the information tells you another way of living in the moment - Slowing Down!

Doing Things Slowly

Life can often feel like it’s zipping by in fast forward. We feel obliged to accelerate our own speed along with it, until our productivity turns into frenzied accomplishment. We find ourselves cramming as much activity as possible into the shortest periods of time. We disregard our natural rhythms because it seems we have to just to keep up. In truth, rushing never gets you anywhere but on to the next activity or goal.

Slowing down allows you to not only savor your experiences, but also it allows you to fully focus your attention and energy on the task at hand. Moving at a slower place lets you get things done more efficiently, while rushing diminishes the quality of your work and your relationships. Slowing down also lets you be more mindful, deliberate, and fully present. When we slow down, we are giving ourselves the opportunity to reacquaint ourselves to our natural rhythms. We let go of the “fast forward” stress, and allow our bodies to remain centered and grounded. Slowing down is inherent to fully savoring anything in life. Rushing to take a bath can feel like an uncomfortable dunk in hot water, while taking a slow hot bath can be luxuriant and relaxing. A student cramming for a test will often feel tired and unsure, whereas someone who really absorbs the information will be more confident and relaxed. Cooking, eating, reading, and writing can become pleasurable when done slowly. ! Slowing down lets you become more absorbed in whatever it is you are doing. The food you eat tastes better, and the stories you read become more alive.

Slowing down allows you to disconnect from the frenzied pace buzzing around you so you can begin moving at your own pace. The moments we choose to live in fast forward motion then become a conscious choice rather than an involuntary action. Learning to slow down in our fast-moving world can take practice, but if you slow down long enough to try it, you may surprise yourself with how natural and organic living at this pace can be.

Journaling also helps you to slow down because you have to watch what you're doing in the moment in order to report it in your journal.  The great part is that you can always go back to check your progress, besides sometimes picking up insights that you can apply to your daily life to improve it.  Even love making gets better when you slow down and become aware of what's occurring.  It's part of self discovery and building greater self worth.

QUESTION EVERYTHING!  THAT'S WHERE THE TRUTH RESIDES.

Writing in a journal daily has become a routine in which I savour being alive and well and able to take the time. Life at a fast pace is rarely for you and at the end of the day except for rushing around and doing a half ass job you haven't accomplished anything.

True words of wisdom Capt.

Thanks, JWL! My journaling not only saved my life after my wife decided to leave me, but is responsible for the positive decisions I made for myself, since. The personal analysis one can make about oneself without a doctorate in psychology is amazing. Almost 30 years, and for common people, I think journaling is the best thing an individual can do for personal success in life! JWL, thanks for the input AND keep getting healthier my Friend!

Being in the moment is the reason I cherish days that nothing is planed and I can slow down take a breath.Too many people are about doing and not enough about being which can leave many people feeling unfulfilled.Life is too short!

When I was 13 a teacher introduced me to writing in a daily journal. Many times over the years this has saved my sanity and helped to guide me through much strife. Unfortunately my life was also filled with certain people who invaded my personal space and privacy who had found some of my writings and condemmed me for them, forcing me to destroy much of what I had written, both createivly and personally. I've come to realize that the hardest times for me were those in which I was pushed and pulled in multiple directions and unable to write in any form. Unable to write, due to the fear of someone reading my most inner thoughts in trying to find myself and the right roads to take out of different personal controverises and family disruptions only made things worse for me.

I know these were insecure and fearful people, but they also knew how to make things miserable for me in their uncanny ways. For the first time in my life, and it's been a long one, :) I now feel secure in writing anything I wish in my personal journal without the need for trying to write in a secretive type code.

Those that pry with sneaky eyes, never understand the complexicity of someone elses thoughts or the inner turmoils or even pleasures that produce such things and only see what is really in their dark souls. And those that try to read too much into a story or poem trying to project their thoughts into those of the writer are to be pittied because THEY are the really weaks ones, in not knowing themselves.

Hugs

Adversely, knowing your passions helps you speed up! Some people are in a rut and feel lethargic about their life. They become immobilized. Knowing those passions can help you speed up your life because it helps you subconsciously dedicate immense amount of energy into something you enjoy. In fact, sometimes you'll even be surprised of how much energy you truly have.

Along with journalism, I also think personal dialogue is great too. Journalism and Personal Dialogue is definitely the same thing, but with a different medium. Meditating would be the cousin of Journalism. Someone close to me recently told me about a friend he once had at a young age who was really good to him. He noticed the friendship dissipated for a short while because he felt that the other friend wasn't spending enough time with him. He recently realized that back in those old days, that friend was truly a priceless friend and very loyal and attached but he was too blind to that and took it for granted. Through his inner dialogue he asked "It's not what HE did wrong, it's what I did wrong. " Learning to shift the blame and responsibility to his own power allowed him a new perspective that he used to rekindle his friendship and give it a stronger bond. That wouldn't have been possible without taking a long time to think and look within himself. :)
